Chapter 2
Chapter Two Reading Assignment
Diagnostic coding was initially developed to provide statistical information on the signs, symptoms and diseases for which patients were being seen. The information was tracked through a system called the London Bills of Mortality dating back to the seventeenth-century. This tracking of information evolved and by 1937 the system changed into the International List of Causes of Death. The World Health Organization tracked disease and disease processes by developing a listing called International Classification of Diseases. This list tracked morbidity (number of sick persons or cases of disease in relation to a specific population) and mortality (ratio of number of deaths in specific population) rates throughout the world. This classification of diseases led to the International Classification of Diseases publication in use today.
